Another school year has begun and the smell of fall is in the air! I have always loved the first day of school; getting up earlier than I had all summer, excited to see old friends and meeting some new people, a new teacher. A bit of electricity in the air. Even though I’m not in school anymore, fall is my favorite time of year. The kids are packed and off to school, the leaves on the trees are starting to change, there is the beautiful coolness in the mornings and evenings … all that suits me perfectly. A great season for riding the bike around town and seeing the changes that the season brings. I encourage everyone to get out there and enjoy!
A couple of things going on in the next few days that sound really good:
Montana Shakespeare in the Parks presents a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on August 31st, which begins at 6 PM at UM’s Oval. Call 243-5590 and visit montana.edu/shakespeare. It’s free too!
Community Livability and the Path to Sustainability,” a lecture by former Missoula mayor Daniel Kemmis that begins at 7:10 PM on September 1st, in Room 123 of UM’s Gallagher Business Building. Call 543-5323 and visit sustainablebusinesscouncil.org. It’s free.
Have a great day and I’ll see you around! liz
FIRST DAY OF 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR
Monday, Aug. 30, will be the first day of school for most students attending Missoula County Public Schools in Missoula.
Students in kindergarten through grade 8 begin classes on Aug. 30. Kindergarten students will have a shortened day on that Monday.
Only freshmen students will report to Hellgate, Sentinel, Big Sky and Seeley-Swan High Schools on the first day of school, Aug. 30. Students in grades 10 through 12 (sophomores, juniors and seniors) will report for a full day of classes on Tuesday, Aug. 31, joining their freshmen classmates.
All students enrolled in alternative high school programs at Willard School on Monday, Aug. 30.
Here’s wishing for a great school year. Go to the Missoula County Public Schools site for more details.
There has been a lot going on our our way this summer. Missoula City/County just finished the very cool bike trail from Cote Lane to Flynn Lane. I see people out there every single day using the trail! Thanks to JTL for doing a great job on it and getting it done quickly!
Ready for another great music event in Missoula? Every August we look forward to some great music in the streets of downtown Missoula. IT IS HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND. Saturday August 28th and Sunday Aug 29th. Check out the website for the River City Roots Festival and plan to come downtown to listen to some great music, see the juried Art Show or take in the Children’s Fun Festival.
Here’s the info the Downtown Association provides on their website, for more info, check out the link, http://www.rivercityrootsfestival.com/
The Northside/Westside neighborhood is blessed to have some pretty great organizations and events. Today I want to introduce you to the Clay Studio of Missoula. Throughout the summer they hold First Friday art events for the public, kids camps and outdoor celebrations. Since summer is about over, most of those events are now in the past, but the studio is still a vibrant place to gather and become a member and create some art. They have classes, workshops and outreach programs for both adults and children. You can find out a lot more at their web site: http://www.theclaystudioofmissoula.org/
Wow, another season has come to an end. Don’t forget to enjoy the last three days of fun. Kids of all ages, and their parents too, have enjoyed hot summer days in the water at Splash. We can now look forward to fall sports and more time at the park!
Yesterday it was tree trimming in the 200 block of Connell Avenue. Today there are five (5) trees that have been removed. My guess is that the City is removing dead or dying or diseased trees. Sure makes the street scape look different! Check it out.

p.s. River City Roots Festival this weekend — be there or you’ll be sad. It is so much fun and the music is always interesting and fantastic. Best yet, it is free!
Living on this southside of town, it’s hard to imagine the Missoula airport being in the approximate location of the fair grounds today, isn’t it? Here is a link to the history of the Missoula airport to explore http://www.flymissoula.com/index.aspx/about/History
Summer is almost over believe it or not … and what a green summer it has been and is. I actually have been loving it, being the Swede that I am, and loving those cool temps. This weekend there was so much to do, as is typical of a summer weekend here in Missoula. The feature event I’d like to tell you about is the Missoula Outdoor Cinema. Saturday, Aug. 21 was the screening of “The Big Lebowski”. Next Friday night is the showing of “Mama Mia” with my all time favorite actor, Meryl Streep. Bring your lawn chair and blanket and $5 and sit outside on the lawn of the “Head Start School, 1001 Worden Ave. This is a much more delightful way to watch a movie than the old drive-in theaters where you were cramped into a car. It’s outside under the stars and lots of room to spread out and enjoy. This is a very family friendly sweet event and so Missoula!
After a walk around the duck pond enjoying the sights, it is a real treat to cross the street and have a delectable treat at Indulge Bakery. You can also place orders ahead to pick up and take with you.
