Looks like those living in the Pattee Canyon/Farviews area can breath a sigh of relief and enjoy traffic as usual without the fear of a new gravel pit development. See the story below by KEILA SZPALLER of the Missoulian posted: Tuesday, December 28, 2010 9:06 am
The economy has “indefinitely” stalled a plan to build homes at the gravel pit site up Pattee Canyon Drive.
“For now, there will be no change in use – the city will continue to use the site for material storage and stockpiling,” wrote Elaine Hawk, owner and principal planner with pLAND Land Use Consulting. “The property remains on the market but Knife River is still the current landowner.”
Hawk made her remarks in a letter to neighbors, who she said should be on the lookout for the winter update in their mailboxes. The plan to hold off on the project is a change in direction from roughly one year ago.
Then at a neighborhood meeting, pLAND consulted with people in the area about annexing the property and putting homes on a flatter 5-acre portion of the 30-acre site. The idea was to reclaim the pit, design a plan for as many as 75 condominiums and create green space.
“We do anticipate an eventual turnaround in the building industry and Knife River will revisit the project at that time,” reads the letter.
Hawk said once the market improves, Knife River plans to pick up where the plan and community conversation left off: “The only reason there would be any real significant change is if somebody else buys it and starts their own way.”

Merry Christmas everyone. Oh my, this has been a fantastic week. The lunar eclipse on Monday night was worth getting up for and sitting outside watching the moon get swallowed by our shadow and then return to the big beautiful brightness that it is. And on the solstice no less! Bring back the light! Our days are now starting to get longer day by day. Last night I went skiing in the Rattlesnake with a dear friend. Moonlit skiing – what could be better? We live in the most fantastic, glorious place on earth here. Happy New year to all! And wishing for light and laughter and joy and love and abundance for everyone. May it be a fantastic year ahead!
