William Shutkin, a global leader in sustainability and social entrepreneurship, will give the second event of the spring series of The University of Montana Natural Resources and Environmental Policy Forum.
Shutkin, who is executive director of the Rocky Mountain Land Use Institute, will present “Collapse, Collective Action, Conundrum: Pursuing Sustainable Communities in the Age of Ideology” at noon Thursday, March 31, in the UM School of Law Castles Center. The forum is free and open to the public.
“For most, creating sustainable communities is about green building standards, caps on greenhouse gas emissions, open-space conservation and incentives for solar energy, among other strategies. But that’s the easy part,” Shutkin said.
“The politics of sustainability and the ideas and mental models that shape it are where things get tough,” he said, “and no community is immune from the eclipsing effect of ideology and people’s infatuation with their own ideas.” He will talk about that tension between ideology and sustainability and how it can be resolved.
Shutkin is a lecturer at the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law and a visiting scholar at the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is a founding partner of Urban Sustainability Associates and the author of the award-winning book “The Land That Could Be: Environmentalism and Democracy in the Twenty-First Century.”

University area drivers will want to watch for road closures on Arthur-5th to Eddy beginning April 4, 2011 when a 6 week water main replacement project will start. One lane of traffic will be maintained on 5th and 6th at all times, but the City says to “expect significant delays and congestion.” This would be a nice time to have your favorite CD in your car! And maybe a coffee from The Buttercup Cafe & Market! Judy Wahlberg, Neighborhood Advocate Volunteer.
With the coming of spring people are out again. I see them at the school playing with dogs or kids playing on the courts and swing set. Spring sports are starting up and practice is going on. There are some new businesses and some old ones reopening. If you want to comment on what’s new around the hood, do it here!
This is the sign outside CS Porter Middle School.
I have a feeling that Porter PRIDE doesn’t simply mean wearing your school colors. I understand that it is more than that. Am I correct?
I love Missoula. We always have entertainment and so many choices of things to do, places to go, people to see. We always have improvements in our fine city and a great, thriving downtown. We have improved bike and walking paths and trails. Soon, the bike trail will extend to Reserve Street, past (West) of Russell. This is all good. One recent article I read is below, from the Missoulian about a new bridge for pedestrians and bikes. Keep up the good work, Missoula!
From Joe Nickell of the Missoulian:
Pedestrians and bicyclists on Missoula’s west side will soon enjoy a much less circuitous connection to the Riverfront Trail, thanks to a short yet vital new bridge being constructed near the south end of the California Street footbridge.
Situated in the so-called Silver Park development, a 15-acre public park situated along the south side of the Clark Fork River between Ogren-Allegiance Park and the California Street footbridge, the short pedestrian bridge is the most visible of several enhancements aimed at transforming the former industrial site into a mult-iuse oasis for Missoula residents.

I just read in the paper today that Missoula’s west side will soon have a new connection to the Riverfront Trail via a pedestrian and bicyclist bridge being constructed near the south end of the California Street footbridge.
The new bridge will be located in Silver Park , a 15-acre public park running along the south side of the Clark Fork River between Ogren-Allegiance Park and the California Street footbridge.
The Federal Community Transportation Enhancement Program is putting in about a half a million dollars into the project, which besides the bridge will include irrigation, electrical infrastructure and landscaping. The bridge is the most visible feature being added in the third of four phases in development of the park, which sits in an area that once served as a storage and staging area for the Intermountain Lumber Mill in what’s known as the Old Sawmill District.
