MCNC Held Public Meeting

June 30, 2011  •  Author:

Despite the threat of rain, a small group of neighbors got together last night to enjoy ice cream sundaes and lemonade.  This was the 1st meeting of the newly reformed Miller Creek Neighborhood Council which stretches from Upper Miller Creek Road west toward the Bitterroot River and includes Upper and Lower Linda Vista and sections of Maloney Ranch.  Mayor Engen was on hand to visit with residents, as were the City Council reps.

The group elected a committee and representatives to the Missoula Neighborhood Council Forum, which meets every 4th Thursday at 7pm in City Council chambers.  The rain and wind did come before there was much opportunity for public comment – so please contact us if you have a comment.  What needs to be changed in Miller Creek? What is great about the neighborhood and how can we make it even better?  Here is a link the Missoula Neighborhood Council’s webpage.   http://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/index.aspx?nid=298

If you would like to added to the Miller Creek Neighborhood Council email distribution list, please send your name, address and email to: montanaamy@hotmail.com

Backyard Beekeeper

June 22, 2011  •  Author:

Urban beekeeping

We’re finally seeing some nice weather, and it’s fascinating what people get up to when they can go outside again. One of my favorite neighbors has a new passion … beekeeping. Although this picture was taken through the window, it wasn’t because of safety concerns; I just happened to see her and didn’t want to miss the shot. The bees are as gentle and self absorbed as tiny kittens. This particular box design is meant to more accurately mimic how they would nest in the wild … because it is a trough, with varying shapes and sizes of spaces inside, the bees can choose the shapes and sizes of their cells.

Unlike a Langstrom box, the trough allows for varied cell shape and size

One theory is that mites have adapted to attack the size and shape of the cells in the traditional square boxes, called Langstrom boxes. The trough, because the cells are not uniform throughout, allows the hive to withstand a mite infestation and fight them off.

Hanging out in this tiny back yard is just like being in any yard … the only bees that are obvious are the few coming and going at the door to the hive. But as soon as it starts to rain, you realize how many of these invisible little workers there are as they come streaming home to get out of the wet. They rise from the grass, they fall from the trees. They come in at speed from every direction, swerving smoothly around us as if we were rocks in a stream.

A lovely addition to the neighborhood, and I can’t wait to try honey made from the flowers I see every day.

Getting my own front porch ready for the summer!

June 14, 2011  •  Author:

Even though it’s raining almost daily and we’ve still got way above average snow pack in the mountains I’m still positive that sometime soon it’ll warm up and dry up in Western Montana. With warmer weather I find that much like many other people in my neighborhood I want to get outside and enjoy the beauty of Montana in the summer.

My yearly project comes in the form of organizing, cleaning off, and “decorating” my front porch, a place where I spend a lot of evenings in the summer months. My neighborhood (Pleasant View) is very much a front porch neighborhood, most all of the homes feature some sort of good sized front porch or deck designed to bring people out of their homes and into a more social environment which is my neighborhood.

Most evenings if you walk down the streets in Pleasant Views or Hellgate Meadows you’re likely to say hi to at least 10 to 15 people who are usually sitting on their front decks or playing with their families or pets in their front yards. My neighborhood is wonderfully designed for easy walks and even easier social interaction, it’s one of the biggest reasons why I love living in this area.

My deck itself faces to the West, so it heats up considerably on those hot summer days in July and August, however it’s great for tomatoes! This year I doubled the amount of tomatoes I planted thanks in part to a client who grows what seems like hundreds of them each year! I’m thinking come this August my front deck might look more like a tomato hedgerow!

Take care Missoula!

June 9, 2011  •  Author:

Categories: All Neighborhoods

With water levels already in flood stages in Missoula and projected to only be exceeded by the flood of 1908, our neighborhoods are in crisis.

Now, more than ever, our community’s generous spirit is appreciated by the people that call it home. I know so many people are out there, helping friends and neighbors prevent damage to their homes; what a beautiful thing! Thank You.

However, while you’re out helping please don’t forget to be careful. Water is a powerful force and a small amount of running water can easily cause damage.

Stay safe Missoula!
