Looks like those living in the Pattee Canyon/Farviews area can breath a sigh of relief and enjoy traffic as usual without the fear of a new gravel pit development. See the story below by KEILA SZPALLER of the Missoulian posted: Tuesday, December 28, 2010 9:06 am
The economy has “indefinitely” stalled a plan to build homes at the gravel pit site up Pattee Canyon Drive.
“For now, there will be no change in use – the city will continue to use the site for material storage and stockpiling,” wrote Elaine Hawk, owner and principal planner with pLAND Land Use Consulting. “The property remains on the market but Knife River is still the current landowner.”
Hawk made her remarks in a letter to neighbors, who she said should be on the lookout for the winter update in their mailboxes. The plan to hold off on the project is a change in direction from roughly one year ago.
Then at a neighborhood meeting, pLAND consulted with people in the area about annexing the property and putting homes on a flatter 5-acre portion of the 30-acre site. The idea was to reclaim the pit, design a plan for as many as 75 condominiums and create green space.
“We do anticipate an eventual turnaround in the building industry and Knife River will revisit the project at that time,” reads the letter.
Hawk said once the market improves, Knife River plans to pick up where the plan and community conversation left off: “The only reason there would be any real significant change is if somebody else buys it and starts their own way.”
Winter hikers can enjoy the numerous trails, scenic views and varied terrain on the North Hills, Mount Sentinel, Rattlesnake; and in the Pattee Canyon, Blue Mountain and Rattlesnake recreation areas. The new Parks and Trails map, available at Currents Aquatics Center and local retailers after Dec. 13, features detailed maps of open space trails. The map costs $4. Hikers are reminded to leash dogs where posted and remove their pet’s waste.

Don’t miss your last opportunity of the season to enjoy a little friendly fall folfing. The Pattee Canyon Folf Course will be closing for the season on November 1st.
Allied Waste has ordered a new shipment of extra-tough garbage containers that could help discourage trash-hunting bears on Missoula’s urban fringe.
Bear-proof cans should be available for rent by Monday, according to Bear-Aware coordinator Erin Edge of Defenders of Wildlife. The cans are part of a citywide effort to prevent bear-human conflicts in places like the Rattlesnake, Grant Creek, East Missoula and Pattee Canyon.
So pick your apples, make a pie or two and consider bear-proof garbage cans if you live in the Pattee Canyon area.
Wow, another season has come to an end. Don’t forget to enjoy the last three days of fun. Kids of all ages, and their parents too, have enjoyed hot summer days in the water at Splash. We can now look forward to fall sports and more time at the park!
A Western Montana highlight, Fair Week! Let’s hope we have fireworks to enjoy. Those of us who like to have our windows open or sit outside and enjoy the summer evening may hear the roar of the concert crowds and the clash of monster trucks. Whatever your fancy, hope you enjoy.

Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks agents were called to the intersection of Maurice and Woodward in the University District late Tuesday morning for a report of a large black bear that had climbed a tree.
FWP tranquilized the bear to remove him for safety, but he fell asleep before coming down.
Missoula firefighters tried to help remove the 200-pound bruin with ropes, but the bear slipped through, falling 40 feet to the ground. The bear was OK and was taken away for relocation.
FWP officials told Montana’s News Station that they believe this is the same bear that’s been causing neighborhood problems in the Pattee Canyon area over the last few weeks. (KBZK Bozeman News)
Don’t forget the Southgate Mall fireworks display. Normally between 10-10:30pm, the Farviews area makes for a great panoramic display looking out over the city. For an up close and personal view, enjoy the show from Southgate mall with pre-show activities, to be announced.
In preparation for the opening of Pattee Canyon for the 2010 season, there will be 2 work evenings next week.
