New Bridge

March 21, 2011  •  Author:

I love Missoula. We always have entertainment and so many choices of things to do, places to go, people to see. We always have improvements in our fine city and a great, thriving downtown. We have improved bike and walking paths and trails. Soon, the bike trail will extend to Reserve Street, past (West) of Russell. This is all good. One recent article I read is below, from the Missoulian about a new bridge for pedestrians and bikes. Keep up the good work, Missoula!

From Joe Nickell of the Missoulian:

Pedestrians and bicyclists on Missoula’s west side will soon enjoy a much less circuitous connection to the Riverfront Trail, thanks to a short yet vital new bridge being constructed near the south end of the California Street footbridge.

Situated in the so-called Silver Park development, a 15-acre public park situated along the south side of the Clark Fork River between Ogren-Allegiance Park and the California Street footbridge, the short pedestrian bridge is the most visible of several enhancements aimed at transforming the former industrial site into a mult-iuse oasis for Missoula residents.

Spring and Sunshine

March 11, 2011  •  Author:

Well, I have just returned from Yelapa Mexico and had the most delicious time. Yelapa is a town with no roads, we stayed in a casa with no walls, had no cell service, no internet. Loved every minute of it! Played lots of music in this little village of about 200 people, ate such great food, saw humpback whales almost every day. Also saw dolphins and manta rays and such colorful birds, who’s names remain unknown to me but their colors stay in my mind and memory. It was fantastic. OK, so, this blog is about the North and West sides of Missoula, not my vacation, but it is still so fresh in my mind I had to share.

Back in Missoula – the sun is shining today, much of the snow has melted. I am obviously ready for Spring. I know the Zootown Arts Collective is having fun with their indoor cinema, please continue to take a look at their web site to stay on top of what they are doing these days www.zootownarts.org If you haven’t checked out the Food Co-op lately, I know they are continuing to grow and are doing such amazing work. Ah, vacation is good but it is the sweetest to come home to a community that I love.

Dog Logic

The Northside neighborhood is full of life and creative businesses and entrepreneurs.  Dog Logic is one of these.  I just looked at their web site at www.nocagesmontana.com and wow, it’s so much fun.  They offer doggy daycare with radient floor heat, interactive toys, birthday parties, long or short off-leash hikes, pet supplies and so much more.  They call themselves a “Canine Social Club” and from the pictures and stories I’ve heard from local friends, that’s a great description.  Check out their website – it’s full of fun pics and information.

Zootown Arts Community Center

The ZACC has something new coming up – what a great addition to what the North Missoula Community Development Center does in the summer months with their Missoula Outdoor Cinema.  Now, we have community movies inside for the winter.   Take a look at what Hanna, the director, says about it:

Northside Winter Indoor Cinema Info:

The ZACC seeks to make a greater digital impact on artists and community
individuals, and has developed a Winter Indoor Cinema starting February
27th. The Cinema came about out of suggestions made by our patrons. The
series is free for the public.

This winter series of five films and film shorts will highlight
independent and local films. A few nights will be dedicated to
international films by local and international filmmakers, producers, and
artists. Many of the filmmakers have chosen to speak before and after the
screenings.

The First Annual Winter Indoor Cinema will run every Sunday at 6pm in the
evening from February 27th through March 27th. Donation fees will be taken at the door, but the program is free to the public.

The Winter Indoor Cinema (a series of five films) was established by the
Arts and Programming Committee at the ZACC, which was created in 2010.

According to the North Missoula Community Development Corporation (whom holds the Missoula Outdoor Cinema at Headstart School on Worden Street during the summer months, “there is a sense of renewed vitality and
community caring that is becoming more and more palpable.”  The ZACC is
proud to be part of this revitalization, engaging patrons in this spirit
of service. Funds from donations toward the Winter Indoor Cinema will be
reallocated to the operations of this program as well as other independent
projects the Arts and Programming Committee will take on throughout the
2011-2012 year.

Should you have any questions, please contact our Programming Chair,
Janaina, or Hanna (ZACC’s Program Director) at 406.549.7555

Food Co-op

I know I have posted more than once about the Missoula Food Co-op on the Westside, but I am so excited about it that I have to share an update. I went there yesterday to just check out the progress. Oh my gosh – it looks so great. The store is stocked with so much good food and is so organized and roomy. There is a new entryway and more produce, and more of everything than the last time I stopped in there. The building has new windows and a new exterior paint job that looks fantastic. Construction is still happening in the area that will eventually house the cafe and kitchen. It’s amazing. Corner of Burns and Cooley on the Westside – go check it out. It is a members only co-op but the membership is very reasonable and the time required to keep the membership and shop there is also reasonable.

Make It a Great One

My intention this year is to take more pictures of the Northside/Westside neighborhood; get to know some individuals; get some good stories. I haven’t done that yet this week, so am here to say I just love the Northside/Westside and Happy New Year to everyone.

Last night I stopped by the Northside Kettlehouse to meet with some friends and it was jam packed with people supporting Lowell School. The Kettlehouse donates a portion of their profit for the eve to an organization – and last night Lowell School must have made a bit of money – I have never seen it so crowded … part of why I love this neighborhood. Also, I know the Food Co-op is moving into their new space and is growing. Peace to all, and may the year bring us all joy.
