Happy Holidays

Merry Christmas everyone. Oh my, this has been a fantastic week. The lunar eclipse on Monday night was worth getting up for and sitting outside watching the moon get swallowed by our shadow and then return to the big beautiful brightness that it is. And on the solstice no less! Bring back the light! Our days are now starting to get longer day by day. Last night I went skiing in the Rattlesnake with a dear friend. Moonlit skiing – what could be better? We live in the most fantastic, glorious place on earth here. Happy New year to all! And wishing for light and laughter and joy and love and abundance for everyone. May it be a fantastic year ahead!

Holiday Parties

Wow, it’s been so busy with the Holiday Season upon us.  The last couple weeks there was the Parade of Lights and First Friday and the ACLU awards banquet for Stacey Rye and Dave Strohmaier for sponsoring the anti-discrimination ordinance, violin recitals with my partner and all her students, private holiday parties, gay men’s chorus dinner performance and fundraiser and so many others.  The parties continue this week and next.

This coming Friday the NMCDC (North Missoula Community Development Center) is having their Holiday gathering.  Everyone is invited, so feel free to join them in celebrating the holiday season and your support of the North Missoula Community Development Corporation on Friday, December 17th from 4:00-6:00p.m. at the NMCDC office (819 Stoddard Ave.) Enjoy some drinks, some treats and some great company!  And be safe out there!

Winter

Thanksgiving has come and gone and for me was a wonderful gathering of friends and family. Hanukkah starts tomorrow and before we know it Christmas is here. So many gatherings and Holiday parties are happening around town I always have difficulty picking and choosing where to go. And I always have a good time, whereever I end up. I love this time of year. First Friday is coming up on Dec. 3 and new and old galleries alike become part of the overall buzz of the season. The Northside and Westside neighborhoods are no exception to the holiday spirit. Decorations are sprouting up, the food co-op is buzzing with new construction, the gardens have been put to bed and are under a blanket of snow. It’s time to breath in the cold air and send out the warm heartfelt thoughts to all. Discover the beauty in everything and enjoy.

Lowell School Helping Hands Garden

Yes, it is Fall and in fact before we know it, winter will be upon us.  What does that mean for gardens?  Well, we are all harvesting the last of the veggies, putting everything to bed and cleaning up.  The Helping Hands Garden at Lowell Elementary School is still looking for volunteers to help them out with the post season projects and, of course, it’s never too early to start the planning process for the next year.  Below is an excerpt from the web site and from Britta, the garden coordinator:

The Flagship Program at Lowell Elementary is looking for enthusiastic volunteers who want to create and lead an after-school garden club at Lowell Elementary School this October/November.   We would love to offer a once-a-week garden club, exploring post gardening season projects, such as science, art, crafts, cooking, games, etc…

Lowell School houses a beautiful school garden which our students are very attached to and we’d love to offer garden-based activities for after-school program participants.  Are you interested in facilitating a creative garden-themed after school club for grade 2-3 studentsThis would require your creative leadership and a 9-week commitment for the 2 hour after-school program (3-5pm, once/week).

If you are interested, please contact

Gena Moore, Flagship Coordinator at Lowell at ph# 728-2400 x4425 or at email lesflagship@mcps.k12.mt.us

or

Britta Bloedorn, Lowell School Garden Coordinator at email babloedorn@mcps.k12.mt.us.

Thank you!!

Northside Pedestrian Bridge

The bridge is open today, Oct 26 and will be closed Oct. 27-29 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. only. Improvements will include increased lighting, new crime prevention features, installation of bird-deterrent screening, sealing, cleaning and painting of the bridge deck and structure. It’s a hassle for now but will be worth it in the long run once it gets the new face lift.

Helping Hands Garden

Missoula’s Westside is an amazing place with so much community spirit.  Last year, April 2009, a community garden began with the garden building party at the Lowell School grounds.  It started with Flagship help and is now established by the PTA at Lowell.  The project’s  mission is “to provide hands on learning in an outdoor setting while building a connection with the natural world and the school community.”   The vision is for the garden to become self-sustainable but for now funds are needed to maintain the program and to keep their garden coordinator, Britta,  on staff.

The Helping Hands Garden is a community supported project where kids can learn about growing vegetables, herbs and flowers and have fun doing it.  That’s important today especially in teaching our youth where food comes from and the importance of what healthy eating is about.  Some kids have not had this kind of opportunity before or the knowledge about sustainably grown food sources.

Parents, teachers and neighbors get together and make kale snacks, rhubarb cake, zucchini bread and other nutritious yummies from the garden and share with the kids … and it’s not just about food either.  The garden program consists of classes and projects that integrate math, science, geography, writing and art.  This is an important part of our community as a whole and the Westside neighborhood specifically.   For answers to your questions or if you’d like to volunteer or donate to keep this amazing program running, contact Britta Blodorn at babloedorn@mcps.k12.mt.us.  It is an absolutely worthy cause and an amazing community project so worthy of our support.
