Car incognito

The guys up the street on Connell Avenue had a great time last night covering up someone’s car with just a few of the MANY leaves that have fallen in the past couple of days. Judy Wahlberg, University Area Neighborhood Volunteer Advocate

U Area Marathon photo

July 13, 2011  •  Author:

My little granddaughter met me with her poster as I was walking up Hilda Avenue toward the finish line of the Half Marathon on 6/10/11. At this point I was thinking strongly about sitting down as 12.5 miles had really stressed me to the limit! Made it, though, to the finish. The neighborhood really turns out for this event with music, cheering crowds, water and food along the way. Very cool!

These recitals are always a treat! There is a small $10 general admission fee, or $5 for students and/or seniors. Performance is at 7:30 p.m. at the UM University Theater. Hmmm, coffee at the Buttercup then stroll over to campus for the recital. Fun evening! Judy Wahlberg, Neighborhood Advocate Volunteer, University District.

Used Outdoor Gear Sale at UM April 13

Missoula community members who want to find a deal on outdoor gear or who want to sell their used equipment can check out UM’s Used Outdoor Gear Sale from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, in the University Center.

The sale is a semiannual fundraiser for the UM Campus Recreation Outdoor Program and is free and open to the public. The program collects 15 percent of each sale. Those who volunteer to work the sale for at least three hours will get free breakfast and have the opportunity to purchase equipment first, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Those who want to sell equipment can bring it to the UC between 7 and 11 a.m., and unsold gear must be picked up between 5 and 7 p.m. For more information or to volunteer, call the Outdoor Program at 406-243-5172.

Information provided from TGIF, compliments of University of Montana.

A Hint of Spring

April 5, 2011  •  Author:

Grass is starting to turn green, streets & potholes are being repaired & in our “special leaf district” in the University area the streets are going to be cleaned earlier than usual which is good news. A house came up for sale on Plymouth 3 days ago & has had several showings and already an offer to purchase. Time to think about that Spring freshening, clean up, clean out if you plan to hit the market this Spring…and remember to donate items to one of the many worthwhile nonprofits in Missoula! Forum on Politics of Sustainability 3/31/11

March 29, 2011  •  Author:

William Shutkin, a global leader in sustainability and social entrepreneurship, will give the second event of the spring series of The University of Montana Natural Resources and Environmental Policy Forum.

Shutkin, who is executive director of the Rocky Mountain Land Use Institute, will present “Collapse, Collective Action, Conundrum: Pursuing Sustainable Communities in the Age of Ideology” at noon Thursday, March 31, in the UM School of Law Castles Center. The forum is free and open to the public.

“For most, creating sustainable communities is about green building standards, caps on greenhouse gas emissions, open-space conservation and incentives for solar energy, among other strategies. But that’s the easy part,” Shutkin said.

“The politics of sustainability and the ideas and mental models that shape it are where things get tough,” he said, “and no community is immune from the eclipsing effect of ideology and people’s infatuation with their own ideas.” He will talk about that tension between ideology and sustainability and how it can be resolved.

Shutkin is a lecturer at the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law and a visiting scholar at the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is a founding partner of Urban Sustainability Associates and the author of the award-winning book “The Land That Could Be: Environmentalism and Democracy in the Twenty-First Century.”
